Running Windows Updates

Purpose

Keeping Windows up to date helps protect your computer from security threats, improves system performance, and fixes known issues.

Applies To

  • Windows 11

Check for Windows Updates

Windows 11

  1. Type Updates in the search box in the task bar.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. If updates are available, select Download & install.
  5. Restart your computer if prompted to complete the installation.


Verify You're Up to Date

Once Windows finishes checking for updates, you'll see one of the following:

  • You're up to date – No further action is required.
  • Updates available – Click Download & install.
  • Restart required – Save your work and restart your computer to complete installation.

If Windows Updates Fail

If updates will not install:

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. Try Check for updates again.
  3. Ensure you have a stable internet connection.
  4. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter:
    • Windows 11: Settings → SystemTroubleshootOther troubleshootersWindows UpdateRun

Tips

  • Leave your computer powered on and plugged in while updates install.
  • Large feature updates may take 30 minutes or longer depending on your computer.
  • Some updates require multiple restarts before installation is complete.
