Getting Started with Microsoft MFA

Tags security mfa

As part of our ongoing commitment to security, we are implementing Microsoft Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for all university applications accessed via single sign-on. This change is designed to provide an extra layer of protection for your account and our university's data.

On the date you opt in, you will be required to use Microsoft MFA to sign in to all UBalt applications accessed via single sign-on. After this requirement is put in place you will need to authenticate on all devices you are using to log into your UBalt accounts.

To get started with Microsoft MFA, please follow these steps:

Step 1: Sign out of all UBalt accounts using your UBalt credentials

On desktop and laptop devices, visit portal.office.com and sign out of your account by clicking on your picture icon or initials in the top right corner. Close out your desktop applications, including Outlook, Teams, Zoom, etc.

On mobile devices log out of any apps using your UBalt credentials, including but not limited to Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Workday, TeamDynamix, Canvas, etc.

Step 2: Download the Microsoft Authenticator App

Check your device to determine if you already have the Microsoft Authenticator app.

If you already have the Microsoft Authenticator app on your device, skip to step 3.

If you do not have the app, follow the instructions for downloading the app for your device:

  • For iPhone: Go to the App Store and search for "Microsoft Authenticator." Download and install the app.
  • For Android: Go to the Google Play Store and search for "Microsoft Authenticator." Download and install the app.

Alternatively, you can also scan the QR code at this link.

Follow the instructions to install the app on your phone, but do not open it yet.

Step 3: Setting Up and Registering Your Account

1. Sign in to portal.office.com using your NetID@ubalt.edu.
