Restore a Deleted File or a Previous Version

Overview

If a file was accidentally deleted or changed, you may be able to recover it using Restore previous versions in Windows File Explorer. Recovery depends on whether previous versions are available for the folder.

Instructions

  1. Open File Explorer and locate the folder that contains, or previously contained, the file.

  2. Right-click the folder and select Restore previous versions.

  3. Select an available version with the date and time you need. To recover a deleted file, choose a version from before the file was deleted.

  4. When available, click Open to review the selected version. If you only need one file, copy it to another location and check its contents before replacing any current file.

  5. To restore the entire folder, click Restore. Review any confirmation message before continuing.
